Colorguard wins championshipby Paul Kelley
The Mission San Jose High Colorguard team is a NCBA (Northern California Band Association) Champion. During the April 1, NCBA Winter Guard/ Percussion Competition Championships at Del Oro High School, the colorguard team took first place in the High School Novice Division with a stunningly beautiful performance beating 12 other teams from Superior California and Northern Nevada. The team under the Direction of Monica Kraft and coached by Maggie Taylor only had two members of their eleven member squad with previous experience in Colorguard. Co-captains of the team are Shawna Kelley, and Tracy Feng both juniors at MSJ. Colorguard is a choreographed routine using flags, sabers, and wooden rifles.
The Percussion team, coached by Steve Slater took third place in the High School Standing Percussion competition. The team of twenty four percussionists played precision drum cadences, and a medley of songs using different drums, xylophones, marimbas and other percussion instruments.
