Washington Township Wine Country

by Arathi Satish

In a series of events featuring highlights of local history and growth in celebrating of Fremont's 50th anniversary, the Fremont Main Library will be holding a presentation on Washington Township Wine Country by Ed Pentaleri. This is the third presentation in a series of programs held every 3rd Wednesday of each month through September.

Local historian, Ed Pentaleri, who is well known for standing-room-only presentations on the Irvington district, will unveil various little-known stories of the "Washington Township Wine Country". Ed moved to Fremont 15 years ago and has been a very active member of the society. He serves on the board of the Washington Township Historical Society, the Museum of Local History and the Fremont Architectural Review Board. When Fremont turned 50 years old on January 23, the "Going Gold" celebration event ended with a historical slideshow presentation by Ed Pentaleri that showed Fremont through its five decades as a city.

It is interesting to note that even though other parts of California are better known for grape growing and wine making, towards the end of 18th century, Washington Township had a significant culinary heritage in Mission San Jose. Ed Pentaleri's presentation will illuminate the beginnings with Spanish padres and the rise and fall of 'Washington Township Wine Country" that includes detours and connections from sacrament to Civil War procurement scandals; the arrival of the railroad to the establishment of local universities; gold-rush entrepreneurs, "Robber Barons," immigrants and exiles and finally a long slow decline triggered by disease and natural disasters.
