Caught in the Villain's Grasp

by Derek Johnson

Sunol Repertory Theatre was founded by Vicky and Tom Harland in 1982 for the benefit of Sunol Glen Elementary School. The school's 1930s auditorium is used for performances and has a complete stage with curtains, lights and drops. For the last 24 years, a melodrama has been performed in March to benefit the school's art programs.

For its 25th season, Sunol Repertory Theatre will perform "Caught in the Villain's Grasp," an original play written and directed by Tom Harland.

This year's production is a continuation of the 2002 play, "Caught in the Villain's Gaze." When last we left this story, the villains had been convicted of swindling the townspeople of Livermore. We rejoin them in prison, where they use the distraction of a play performance to protect themselves from the other prisoners. Ironically, this play is "The Man of La Mancha" with its story of Don Quixote, imprisoned with his squire, Sancho, performing to protect themselves. Our grifters pose as performers and stage a diversion to cover an escape. They move on to the next town full of victims, Sunol, where their sideshow scam enables them to place the heiress Ima Peach in peril. We may all be tilting at windmills, but if you believe along with us, we may captivate you as well!

Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at the Sunol Corners Store (corner of Pleasanton-Sunol and Niles Canyon Road, across from the Sunol Water Temple entrance).
