Elementary school kids gear up for new season
The Parkmont Players, a troupe of approximately 50, operates as a free after-school theatre program offered to the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at Parkmont Elementary School. Since its inception six years ago, Brian Benevides has been its director.
This year, the first production will be a One Act Festival consisting of five unique plays: The Tall Tale Tournament by Claire Boiko, The Ghost of Hemstead House,
The Silver Tongued Slicker of Sassafras Flat, A Rose is Just a Rose, and Hairum Scarum all written by Christina Hammlett. Performance dates are Jan. 27 and 28, and Feb. 3 and 4 at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
Due to the success of the Parkmont Players, alumni are invited to return and help direct the plays. This One Act Festival is just the beginning. In April, Parkmont will host Dinner Theatre when actors perform improvisational games after a catered meal. May is the 4th annual Shakespeare Festival in which the works of Shakespeare are performed in the middle of a festive arena with food, games and fun for the whole family.
