Lightning sweeps round one of NorCal Cupby Karin Diamond
The FC Fremont Lightning, girls U13 division one team, swept the first round of play in the NorCal Cup soccer tournament on Saturday, Dec. 3. Fremont Lightning beat the ACC Aegis 92-93 team by a score of 3-0 in the morning, and then the Lightning beat the Brentwood Flame 3-0 in the afternoon.
The Fremont Lightning dominated both games offensively. Against the ACC Aegis, Natalie Sanchez scored two goals and Lauren Jauco scored one. The midfield led by Janel Koide, Lauren Jauco, Aubrey LaLumandiere and Shannon Genberg set the pace of the game by rarely allowing the ball into the backfield. When the Aegis did break through, Fremont Lightning defense including Lauren Floro, Lica Monobe, and Debra Blalock effectively stopped the offensive drives. Megan Kufeld at goalie stopped the only two shots on goal. After coming away with one win, Fremont Lightning were back that afternoon to beat the Brentwood Flame 3-0. Lightning took an early lead with Paige Diamond scoring two goals and Lauren Jauco scoring one. As in the morning game, the midfield and defense for the Lightning did an excellent job stopping the Brentwood offense. Megan Kufeld effectively stopped all shots on goal. The next round of NorCal play will be held before the holidays when the Lightning play the Union City Palmeiras and the Valley Venom. |
