Holiday Pops Concertby Arathi Satish
To help make a child's wish come true for Christmas, the League of Volunteers and the Newark Arts Council will present "Holiday Pops Concert" on Dec. 11, featuring the Ohlone College Wind Orchestra directed by Tony Clements.
This is a joint venture of the League of Volunteers and the U.S. Marine Corps to help needy children in Fremont, Newark and Union City. Apart form the concert, LOV is looking for volunteers to drop of barrels at different businesses throughout the Tri-City area, to pick up toys from those locations and to wrap and sort. The league also needs businesses to sign up to have a barrel at their location. Last year 9,000 toys were collected when the need was for 15,000 toys. The league is trying to meet the full quota for 2005.
Admission to the concert is a new unwrapped toy or a monetary donation. Suggested donation is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and $2 for children 12 to 18. Funds collected will be used to purchase toys.
The program will include the Ohlone Tuba Ensemble who will play Christmas tunes and an orchestra will play popular holiday music. Complimentary refreshments will be served during intermission.
