Titan's Kingdom

by Vidya Pradhan

Are you tired of wrestling with your pooch or kitty when it's bath time? Then head over to Titan's Kingdom, located in the heart of Fremont.

Titan's Kingdom, a hydro-spa for dogs and cats, opened in September 2005 in a storefront at Benton's Apartments on Civic Center Drive. Besides pet bathing, the store offers high quality pet food, equipment and toys.

Owners Eric Ng and Connie Poon were bitten by the entrepreneurial bug following Eric's completion of an MBA program. After a lot of research in pet-related businesses like pet daycare and pet product retail, he came across the novel technology of the PetSpa(r) hydro-spa cabin.

Unlike typical pet stores, where the options are self-service and full service grooming, hydro-spa provides a hands-free option to bathe your pet. The pet goes into a large cabin with mesh openings. The cabin provides a warm hydro-massage shower stimulating circulation, beneficial for animals suffering from arthritis and muscle weakness in need of physical therapy and rehabilitation.

This process reduces a typical bath time - about four minutes with 10-20 minutes to dry - in half. Eric and Connie assist in the process, which they describe as "semi self-service." During the drying process, air is distributed evenly around the cabin. This creates a pleasant experience for animals rather than using a direct stream of air. The gentle shampoo used in the process is safe enough to swallow. Following the PetSpa(r) experience, a comfortable table with equipment to brush your pet is available.

Both the PetSpa(r) and the dryer are roomy and allow the pet to walk around during the process and enable your four-legged friend to look out. So far, Titan's Kingdom has bathed over 300 pets - the majority, dogs. Over 95 percent of the dogs and cats using the spa have been happy customers with some of them begging to go back into the washer when the process is complete.

Titan's Kingdom is named after Eric and Connie's one-and-a-half year old golden retriever, Titan, who can be found welcoming customers at the store. They also own two cats, Meow and Army. Their love of pets translates to the store philosophy, "only carry those products that they would be comfortable using on their own pets." This led them to do serious research on the kinds of pet foods and products available on the market today. Their findings have been distilled into a manual containing the ingredients of popular pet food brands and a breakdown of the effects each ingredient has on the pet's system. Products available at the store contain no corn, wheat or animal by-products.

These knowledgeable owners are happy to discuss the benefits of each brand offered at their store. In addition, a doggie bakery serves birthday pies, cookies, canolis, crostadas, bear claws and donut bones for that special pet. You can also find holistic cat treats and for that purrfect feline, Kitty Kaviar. Dog and cat beds, cat trees and raised diners are also part of the product line they carry.

The store is decorated in pleasant tones of blue and teal and carries gaily colored pet beds and treats in addition to the PetSpa(r). A silent air purifier keeps odors out and a DVD player is available to entertain restless kids. New customers receive an introductory price of $9.99 per wash. A membership program at $5 per year guarantees subsequent washes at $14.99.

Even though Titan's Kingdom has only been open for a couple of months, Eric and Connie are happy with the response to their pet-friendly store that they are already considering franchising options. Their colorful and welcoming store can be found at 39370, Civic Center Drive, Suite B in Fremont. For more information call (510) 402-4303 or visit
