Family Bird Walkby Sabrina Mahajan
Ever listen to the bird calls and wonder who is making that racket...and what it means? Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge will host a Family Bird Walk on Saturday, November 19th that will unveil some of these musical mysteries. Although open to all ages, the walk is designed for children, ages 5 to 10 years old. Led by Katie Fotta, intern at the visitor center, children will create their own personal field guide. She will explain where and when different species of birds might be encountered and also about the salt marsh habitat surrounding the center. Children are encouraged to mark all information on their personal field guides. Armed with this information, Katie will lead families on the bird watching tour over trails surrounding the visitor center. The salt marsh habitat at the visitor center forms a beautiful resting spot for colorful mallards, graceful egrets and many species of migratory birds on their way to the warmer south for the upcoming winter. A limited number of binoculars are available. This is a great way to introduce your children to the joy of bird watching, develop an interest in nature, and to appreciate the serene beauty of the bay. The hilltop location of the visitor center makes it a perfect place to enjoy the magnificent view of the bay and admire the Dumbarton Bridge high-rise from a different angle. Reservations are required.
