Advisors sought for health and sex education programsby Gary Leatherman
The Fremont Unified School District is seeking members for the Family Life Education Advisory Committee (FLEAC). FLEAC provides input to the school district and Board of Education regarding instructional materials and curriculum content in health and family life (sex education) classes in grades 5 through 12. Although parents may request that students not participate in any lessons parents find objectionable, FLEAC provides a forum in which concerns can be discussed before instructional materials are adopted.
FLEAC also advises the Board of Education and health subject area committees regarding philosophy, standards of achievement, timing of information presentation, alternate methods of earning competency in sex/AIDS education and community concerns regarding health and sex education. The committee meets at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the FUSD Education Center, 4210, Technology Drive. Members may be parents or other interested community members.
Applications are available online at www.fremont.k12.ca.us/distcommunity/FLEAC.htm. Members are appointed by the Board of Education for two-year terms. The deadline for applications for the next appointment cycle is Nov. 30. For further information, interested applicants may call (510) 659-2513. |
