Soccer from the Sidelines: Silver Bullets shut out The Team

by Praveena Raman

What happens when you have to play not only against a team that you have lost to previously but also when they are named "The Team"? The under 14 Silver Bullets boys in FC Fremont soccer league were not undermined with the adversity they faced. With a strong team play and great game strategy they shut out their opponents with a score of 6-0 on Saturday, October 15.

The first half of the game started on a strong note with some wonderful passing by Silver Bullets' Nathan Ellebracht, Calvin Chiang and Jason Teague. It was interesting to note the gray and black uniform against the white and black of The Team. It made the spectators wonder if the referee would be able to tell the difference between the players of the two teams and if the players would be able to differentiate between their teammates and the opponents. The excellent passing and the strong kicking by midfielder Adrian Ruiz not only kept the ball on The Teams's side of the field but also won them three goals, each made by Nathan Ellebracht, Calvin Chiang and Jason Teague. Midfielders Scott Kavangh and Alvin Cheng were also strong in the first half keeping the ball nicely in play while goalie Max Dornfest had some nice saves. Joey Neri shone in defense in the first half but unfortunately had to sit out the second half due to an injury.

In the second half again the Silver Bullets used their strength as a cohesive team to continue their strong offense and score three more goals by Nathan Ellebracht, Mihir Jain and Christian Meriles respectively. In the second half midfielder Karthik Raman was, as assistant coach Judy Anderson put it, "all over the field." He dribbled the ball fast up the field many times and with nice passes kept the ball in play.

Throughout the game, defenders Robbie Anderson and David Wilson played strong with defender Jordan Jacques showing strong kicking. Sweeper Aaron Okano had some very nice and slick plays throughout the game.
