40th Annual Fine Art Show
by Tina Cuccia
The Fremont Art Association will hold its 40th Annual Fine Art Show September 30 through October 16 at the Fremont Art Association Gallery located in the historic Niles District of Fremont. Come by and see a variety of works by local and non-local artists.
The juried show will feature cash prizes for "Best in Show" as well as gold and silver cash prizes awarded to selected artists in each of the following categories: oils and acrylics, water media (including watercolors, gouache and acrylics, which are handled as watercolors), graphics (graphite, photography, soft pastels, computer-generated art and mixed media) and three-dimensional works.
The public is invited to a reception and presentation of the awards that will take place from 4 to 6 pm. on October 1.
Juror Gwen Lewis, who has taught fine arts, graphics and photography for the last 28 years, is selecting the artwork and winning pieces from approximately 200 entries. Accepted pieces and candidates for the awards will be displayed on the Fremont Art Association Gallery walls and are available for purchase.
Juried shows add credibility to an artist's work, according to Therese Ely, president of the Fremont Art Association. "And artists from all over the Bay Area can submit their work," Ely said. They've even had submissions from artists as far away as San Diego.
"Our artists range from amateurs and hobbyists to those who are successful professionally," Ely said. "Some have taught internationally or have published books."
Artists submitting work are not required to be a member of the Fremont Art Association, but they can be. "You don't have to be an artist to join [the Fremont Art Association]," Ely said. Membership is open to anyone 18 years and over who is interested in supporting the goals of the association by fostering, promoting and encouraging the cultivation and appreciation of Art. Membership includes monthly guest artist demonstrations, gallery exhibiting privileges, feature artist showcases and the opportunity to interact with a large group of seasoned artists. Members are also invited to take part in the Tri-City-wide "Open Studios" that is sponsored by the Fremont Art Association each spring. During Open Studios, participating artists open their studios to the public.
The 40th Annual Fine Art Show is supported in part by a grant from the Alameda County Art Commission.
Along with the city of Fremont that is celebrating its 50th year in 2006, the Fremont Art Association will also celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.
