Smith Center's 10th Anniversary Gala Celebrationby Arathi Satish
Alex Borstein, the outrageous comedienne from MADtv and Family Guy hosts an all-out salute to the 10th Anniversary of Smith Center Gala opening event for an enjoyable night of comedy, music, food and fun. Borstein, who began her career in comedy in San Francisco, tours the country in a one-woman standup show. Co-starring with Borstein is the legendary Pete Escovedo, playing his own rhythmic version of hot Latin jazz. Escovedo, well-known since the late 60s for playing Latin jazz, salsa, rock and Latin pop, toured with Carlos Santana from 1967 to 1970. He has performed with Herbie Hancock, Woody Herman, Cal Tjader and Tito Puente and founded the Latin big band Azteca with his brother recording two albums.
The event to be held at the Gary Soren Smith Center at Ohlone College includes prelude activities from 6:30 p.m. with food service in Lam Plaza continuing throughout evening. Polynesian dancers will perform at the Jackson Theatre from 7:15 to 8 p.m. while magic and balloon artists stroll through the Amphitheatre. The main show with Escovedo and Borstein will be held in the outdoor amphitheatre from 8 to 10 p.m. Advance Tickets $50 adults, $40 seniors and $25 students.
