Barracudas Southern Division champions for 7th year in a row
by Praveena Raman
Mission Valley Barracudas won their sixth dual meet of the 2005 season against the Glenmoor Stingrays, 565:479. This was their 48th dual meet win since July 1998. This win also made them the Southern Division Champion for the seventh consecutive year. The Barracudas will be swimming against the 2005 Northern Division Champion, the San Leandro Drowning Darryls on Saturday, July 23. All 12 teams in the East Bay Swim League will be swimming at the Championship meet at Chabot College on Saturday, July 30.
The Barracudas have had an exciting time during this short swim season. At one meet the coaches decided to make the 'Cudas swim outside their comfort zone and seeded them in their weakest strokes. Even at this meet the swimmers went with the flow and won the meet by a hairsbreadth. During the following meet the 'Cudas hid their fierce selves in a layer of paint. Coaches made their 15-18 "B" relay team swim as their "A" relay team because they were missing their strongest swimmers. Team members Ashley Chen, Lindsey Hong, Mekala Raman and Brianna Hu bared their teeth and took first place with ease. At yet another meet this season 11-year-old Thomas Chi flipped during his back stroke when his goggles floated away from him. Pausing briefly, he retrieved them, holding them tightly in his hand he proceeded with the stroke and took first place with a cheeky grin.
The following Barracudas placed first in one of more individual events during the meet against the Stingrays: the girls included Elizabeth Hu, Juliana and Tatiana McCuaig, Audrey and Claire McLaggan, Annie and Hannah Scobel, Katie Thompson, Kate Baird, Joanna Wilk, Charlotte Miller, Cathy Wagner and Katherine Eve. Among the boys were Emil Graversen, Bryce McLaggan, Steve Poole, Steven Chi, Mark Perry, Henry Chen, Dean Luo, Michael Wheeler and Petie Scobel.
