BART TO SILICON VALLEY - WHAT'S NEXT?Transportation Forum on extending Bay Area Rapid Transit to Santa Clara County
Extending BART to Silicon Valley is the greatest public works challenge facing Santa Clara County. The project lacks sufficient financing because of lower than expected sales tax revenues and changes in federal funding guidelines.
The Commonwealth Club of California, California State Automobile Association, Mineta Transportation Institute, and Caltrans are sponsoring a Transportation Hot-Spot Forum on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Corridor project. The forum will take place Thursday, April 21, 2005, at 12:30 P.M., in the Sheriffs Department Auditorium, 55 West Younger Ave. in San Jose. For reservations call (415) 597-6705.
The keynote speaker will be Will Kempton, Director of the California Department of Transportation, who will talk about the BART project's significance for the region and the current environment for financing such a large-scale endeavor.
BART is the greatest expense in the Long Term Transit Capital Investment Program (VTP 2030), on which the VTA Board will vote this summer. The proposal suggests getting additional funds through a new permanent half-cent sales tax, 75 percent of which would go to VTA and 25 percent would go to the 15 cities and the County of Santa Clara for other transportation-related purposes.
This forum will provide the public with an opportunity to review the program and consider the alternatives prior to the VTA Board action. A panel of stakeholders representing different points of view will discuss how BART impacts regional and local transportation objectives and what alternatives are being suggested.
Please join the co-sponsors of this forum in a lively discussion of a topic of vital community interest, BART to Silicon Valley. There is no fee for this forum. Advance registration is recommended due to limited seating. For reservations: (415) 597-6705 or http://www.commonwealthclub.org
