Operation Junior Lifeguardby Korey Hayman
This new outreach program is for students 11-14 years old who are interested in becoming a lifeguard. Operation Junior Lifeguard has three steps: Pre-Junior Lifeguard, Junior Lifeguard I and Junior Lifeguard II. The Pre-Junior Lifeguard program is for participants that are still learning how to swim, but interested in becoming a lifeguard. Students will improve their swimming skills, learn self-rescue skills, how lifeguards prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies, leadership, professionalism and decision making. Students will also serve as role models to patrons at the pool and learn how to work together as a team. Reduced class fees and scholarships are available to students who receive free or reduced meals from their attending school district. Pre-Junior Lifeguard classes will be held in the spring (April-May), while all three levels will be offered in the summer (July-August) at the Dan Oden Swim Complex, 33901 Syracuse Avenue, Union City.
