Young Artists Showcase
by Arathi Satish
The Fremont Cultural Arts Council's 18th annual Young Artists Showcase will be presented on Sunday, May 1 at the Smith Center at Ohlone College. Showcase auditions are open to any amateur performer, ensemble, or group in the disciplines of drama, dance, vocal and instrumental. The visual arts segments include photography, sculpture and painting (all media).
Mary Wolfe, chairman of the Young Artists Showcase, who has served the Fremont Cultural Arts Council for over 20 years, feels that organizing the event is a labor of love, "It has been very rewarding to see the level of talent grow and improve over the years. Some of the young people who were winners are now professionals and it's great to know we've played a part in their success."
The purpose of the Showcase, sponsored by the Fremont Cultural Arts Council, is to focus on and provide recognition for Tri-City talented youth, provide an opportunity for critique by qualified judges, award cash scholarships of $450 to Showcase participants and selected visual artists and provide an opportunity to perform on cable television (Showcase is filmed for later broadcast). The junior division is open to who are14 years of age by May 1. The senior division is open to artists who are 15 through 22 as of May 1.
"Although young performing artists have other opportunities to play in front of audiences in recitals and shows, we feel it is important for aspiring young artists to experience the audition process and then review the judges comments. The judges work very hard to judge fairly and write constructive comments about each student's entry," said Margaret Thornberry, president of Fremont Cultural Art's Council.
Art and photography entries will be accepted on April 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. and April 16, from 10 a.m. to noon. Art and photography will be judged on or before April 20. Winners and honorable mentions will be displayed during the Young Artists Showcase on Sunday, May 1, at the Smith Center at Ohlone College. One or two pieces of art or photographs can be submitted with a $10 entry fee and completed application form.
Dance and drama performance time is not to exceed five minutes. Appropriate dress and memorization are considered as part of the judging process. For dancers, auditions will be held at the Centerville Community Center at 3355 Country Drive, Fremont, beginning at 7 p.m. on April 8. Auditions are held for actors at the Fremont Community Activities Center, 3375 Country Dr., Fremont, starting at 7:30 p.m. on April 6.
