Family Resource Center to Hold Parenting Workshopsby Arathi Satish
Parents of elementary school-aged children, who are interested in learning about new ways to reduce conflict, boost self-esteem and get children to cooperate can attend workshops sponsored by the city of Fremont's Youth and Family Services.
One class on listening to children will focus on building new communication skills between parents and their children will be led by Deborah Scott, MFT and Hilda Goldman, MFT, counselors with more than 25 years of experience.
Even though the need for workshops has always been there, the requests for counseling for children have increased. Parents are more aware now, compared to the past, and are more open to the idea of workshops. The program offers wonderful ideas and knowledge is passed on by an experienced staff. The parents who attend the workshops will practice the skills that are discussed, said Scott.
The center will also host two, six-week courses, titled "How to talk so kids will listen" with Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. Parents of preschool and elementary school-aged children will have the opportunity to learn, discuss, share and practice effective parenting strategies to help children deal with their feelings, increase cooperation, increase self-esteem and effective alternatives to punishment. Daytime and evening classes are available. Elaine Culverwell, MFT intern counselor at center and veteran teacher for Fremont Unified School District, will present the morning workshop.
