The Fantasticks soars onto Stage 1by Joanne Engelhardt
The longest-running Broadway musical comes to Newark on Friday, Feb. 11, when The Fantasticks opens for a three-week run. Under the direction of former Newark Memorial High School drama teacher Barbara Williams, the production features several current NMHS students as well as adult actors.
The Fantasticks, with music and lyrics by Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt, is a sentimental tale of two young lovers whose parents try to keep them apart. Songs include "Try to Remember" and "They Were You."
Opening night is Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. The Fantasticks will play evenings at 8 p.m. on Feb. 11-12, 18-19, and 25-26, with 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinees on Feb. 13, 20 and 27.
Appearing in The Fantasticks are Erin Reis of Newark as Luisa and Ricky Webster of Fremont as Matt. Other cast members include Dan Kapler of San Lorenzo as El Gallo, Jami Wallace of Livermore, Doug Brook of San Jose, Ray Doherty of San Carlos, Jack Larson of Fremont and Kelsey O'Connell of Newark.
At the heart of the play's breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless fable that manages to be both nostalgic and universal at the same time.
