Fremont Art Association
by Arathi Satish
The Tri-Cities have been home to many accomplished artists whose works are displayed in galleries and institutions all over the world. Some are hidden to the local community, but there is a place close by where you can catch a glimpse of their work. The Fremont Art Association (FAA), located in the Niles district of Fremont, promotes artists of all levels in the community and allows an exchange of ideas and techniques for local artists. A unique feature of the association is the gallery it operates as a collective effort. Volunteers operate the gallery which houses art in a variety of media including paintings, photography, pottery, jewelry, textiles and more. Admission is free and open to the public.
Founded in 1959, the Fremont Art Association was formed with the expressed purpose of fostering, promoting, and encouraging the production, cultivation, and appreciation of art. The association is very active and offers monthly guest artist demonstrations, the year-round member cooperative gallery, individual artist showcases, an annual open juried art show, end of the year portfolio sale, workshops and classes.
Guest artist demonstrations are held the first Wednesday of each month, except during the months of August and December. A guest artist gives a lecture or demonstration of a specific medium like pastel, watercolor, painting techniques on fabric, pottery, or fused glass.
During the year round cooperative gallery, original artwork can be purchased at reasonable prices. The association starts each quarter with a wine and hors d'oeurvres reception for a new exhibit featuring 35 to 40 artists. Member artists have the opportunity to feature their work in these quarterly shows or in one of the four individual artist showcases held each year.
The public is invited to browse through the gallery and purchase modestly priced artwork that often cannot be found in high-priced galleries where only a few select items may be displayed at premium prices. Many members are well-known in their medium and unavailable to distant buyers. The association gives local buyers and artists a chance to meet these artists and experience their works in an informal and local setting that encourages dialogue.
The Fine Art Show of the Fremont Art Association is "The Annual Open Juried Show" held in the fall. Participants include artists from different parts of the Bay area and the winners receive monetary awards.
Apart from gallery activities, the association has an agreement with twelve local businesses to display member artwork. These pieces are rotated every four months so the business community benefits by displaying artwork that enhances their offices and artists profit by the exposure and possible sale of their artwork. At the end of the year portfolio sale, it is possible to purchase unframed art at reduced price. This sale is currently in progress at the gallery through the end of the year. This is your chance to purchase quality art at sale prices!
The Fremont Art Association also partners with Niles Main Street Association to present the "Annual Niles Art and Wildflower Festival", in May each year. This outdoor event takes place in the main parking lot in downtown Niles. Nurseries, florists, and artists are featured along with music, food, walking tours of community gardens, face painting, children's art activities, and local elementary school student's work is included too. FAA artists participate by displaying their work. Space can be rented at reasonable prices.
Therese Ely, President, Fremont Art Association explains the goals of the organization saying, "The Fremont Art Association has been active in the community since 1959. Our purpose is to foster, cultivate, and encourage the creation and appreciation of art within our community. Throughout the year we have several events to meet those aims. In the spring the Art Association sponsors the Tri-City Open Artist Studio Tour featuring member artists from Fremont, Union City, and Newark. In July our artists will be demonstrating their craft on the grounds of Regan Nursery called the "Ramble Through the Roses" Art in Action weekend. In September we host a juried Fine Art Show with participation from artists throughout the Bay area. Our member artists can show their work both in our gallery and on a rotating set of business sites around town. We also support a children's art show with the elementary schools in the Niles area as part of the Spring Niles Wildflower Festival. The art department at Ohlone College has been the recipient of scholarship gifts from the Art Association for many years."
Members of the association include artists and others who admire the arts and want to support our local artist community.
