Holiday for the Arts
by Arathi Satish
The Olive Hyde Art Guild will be holding its 22nd Holiday Show and Sale, called "Holiday for the Arts." This is the Guild's major annual three-day show that opens with a Friday night gala on December 3. The sale continues free to the public on Saturday December 4th and ends on Sunday December 5th. The event features a show and sale of original art and high quality handcrafted items by many artists.
The wonderful array of art in the show includes paintings, photography, ceramics, glass, metal, jewelry, fiber, wood and holiday goods. More than 70 artists display and sell their creations. New art was screened during the month of September. Sales from the show, which exceeds over $27,000, are divided by 30 percent to the guild and 70 percent to the artist.
The Olive Hyde Art Guild is a volunteer supported non-profit organization that promotes an interest and appreciation for visual arts. Karen Riley Tobin, Olive Hyde Art Guild Ways and Means Chair, pointed out that funds from the Holiday Show and Sale helps to fund the City of Fremont's elementary In-School Art History Program, local student scholarships and student art awards, improvements at the Olive Hyde Art Gallery and special gallery exhibits and promotions. The Art History and Art Reach Classes offers exciting lessons to students with visuals, audio, demonstrations and hands on techniques that reinforce the lesson while duplicating historical methods.
The opening night is a ticketed gala. A large tent is set up in the courtyard of Olive Hyde Art Gallery and gourmet delicacies, wine, cider, coffee and desserts are served and visitors have the first opportunity to view and purchase items of art. Attendees include people from various walks of life like Fremont's business and neighborhood community, the City of Fremont's elected officials and staff, visitors from all over Bay Area, OHAG members and their friends and family.
For those interested in attending, the Holiday Show and Sale will be held at the City of Fremont's Olive Hyde Art Gallery at 123 Washington Boulevard in Mission San Jose. The Gala is on December 3, 2004 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 for members and $15 for non-members. The sale continues free to public on Saturday December 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and ends on Sunday, December 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For further information, call the Olive Hyde Art Gallery at 510-791-4357 or Karen Tobin at (510) 490-4394.
