Silliman Aquatic Center Winter Activitiesby Heidi Leung
Summer is long gone and most of us have packed away our swim suits. For those who were reluctant to put their two-piece or swim trunks in the drawer until June, fear not, there is hope. Silliman Aquatic Center in Newark has an indoor pool complete with lifeguards, pool toys, and varying recreational activities and swim lessons. From not-quite potty-trained toddlers to inexperienced adults, Silliman offers group lessons as well as one-on-one private sessions. For those who are unsure of what level of swimming they are at, a placement test is conducted on the first day of lessons. Also offered at the center are fitness activities for teens and adults such as Splash Aerobics and seasonal activities such as the Sweetheart's Swim around Valentine's Day. The aquatic winter camp schedule adds versatility to the recreational menu with arts and crafts, snorkeling and aquatic sports. Further appealling to weary adults the center offers a shopper's night out, which is basically babysitting by the pool, for parents who need time away from their kids to tackle some holiday shopping. If you're ready to join but are hesitant about prices, have no fear! Prices range from $25-$125 for swim lessons, camps, etc. Silliman Aquatic Center is open Monday through Friday 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-7 p.m, Sunday 8 a.m.-10 a.m. and noon-5 p.m. Contact the center at (510) 742-4400. Now that you know there is an indoor pool, you have an excuse to buy that swim suit that's on sale, unpack your old one, or just get in shape during the winter season!
