They LOV to Feed Others
by Ceri Hitchcock-Hodgson
Make this Thanksgiving Day a memorable one by volunteering at the Partners in Giving's annual Thanksgiving Day Feast. "Partners" is a community-based group comprised of local service organizations and has been hosting the free dinner for 16 years. The Feast will be held at the LOV Community Service Center, 35233-C Newark Blvd in Newark from noon to 3 p.m. The Thanksgiving Day Feast will be brimming with delicious food, entertainment, children's games & crafts and much more.
The Thanksgiving Day Feast is meant for those who would otherwise spend the holiday alone or for those who do not have the resources available to them (i.e. money, shelter) to celebrate Thanksgiving on their own. For those unable to travel to the Community Center, LOV volunteers will be on hand to pick you up in the "Turkey Taxi." Call (510) 793-5683 to schedule a ride. There will also be four pick-up points in Fremont, Newark and Union City from which guests may call to be picked up by the Turkey Taxi.
The volunteers of LOV, serving Castro Valley, Fremont, Hayward, Newark, San Leandro, San Lorenzo and Union City, will deliver Thanksgiving meals to the homebound so that they can join in the Thanksgiving Day festivities with a hot meal and friendly visit.
Last year, LOV served 4,179 meals by way of their Center or through delivery. That number trumped the previous year by a whopping 17%, making 2003 an all time record of need. Partners in Giving expect the demand to be even greater this year and donations are greatly appreciated. A mere sampling of items needed for the feast is as follows: 225 turkeys, 65 hams, 240 pies and 360 oval roasting pans. For a full listing of the items LOV needs to make its 16th annual Thanksgiving Day Feast a success, visit www.LOV.org.
In addition to the Thanksgiving Day Feast, LOV clears an entire room at their Community Service Center for a Thanksgiving "Store" where guests can shop for needed items. Among the things available at the store are gently used, clean clothes, canned foods and toiletries. There is also a need for diapers and baby food. To donate items for the Thanksgiving Store, simply drop them off at LOV's Community Service Center or, if you don't have transportation, call (510) 793-5683 and a volunteer will arrange to pick up your donation.
Monetary donations are greatly appreciated, as well. For more information or to volunteer, call LOV at (510) 793-5683.
The LOV Community Center is located at 35233-C Newark Blvd in Newark, in the Lido Faire Shopping Center.
