Bob Brunton Candidate for Ohlone College Board of Trustees, Seat #4

It has been a pleasure to serve the communities of Fremont, Newark and Union City as your trustee at Ohlone College for two terms (8 years). I have lived in Fremont with my family for over 25 years and I am an owner of a high-tech electronics business. I believe in the value of lifelong learning and promote the role that community colleges provide in meeting educational needs and adding value to our communities.

This past term my primary goal has to been to ensure that Ohlone College is prepared to meet the diverse educational needs of our community. I can say with pride and confidence that my actions have been integral in the reason that Ohlone College is better prepared today to provide a college that is beneficial to our community

I have worked to make Ohlone College a full partner in our community. Ohlone is now offering more programs and cooperates more with our local high schools, local businesses and community groups than in the past. Next term I will continue to look for ways to cooperate and develop programs that will benefit our students, businesses and citizens.

I have advocated and provided a more open, responsive and accountable governing structure. I was able to get our meetings televised and our minutes to have more details so that if you have an interest in what is going on at Ohlone you can find out. I have sought and listened to our students, residents and staff and have been willing to add their suggestions and concerns at our meetings. I have held our management and institution accountable if goals and standards have not been met and I have advocated for rewarding our management and employees for excellent performance. Next term I will continue to advocate open meetings and encourage community participation. I will respond to your concerns and will expect high standards in all categories from our management and staff.

I have insisted that Ohlone's financial foundation be firm and that our reports be more easily understandable. I have provided guidance and support to ensure that the college has adequate financial reserves and that we are preparing for the future.

Next term the college will move beyond cash management to the next step, which is asset management. One key goal will be the implementation of the bond funds as the college district builds a new center in Newark, and the major remodeling of the Fremont campus. Another key goal will be process of acquiring additional funds to help the college without adding additional burdens on our taxpayers. This could be achieved with the income development of the frontage of the Fremont campus and with the addition of areas such as grants and foundation giving.

I have been and will continue to be a strong advocate for the students and taxpayers. I have focused on the details and proposed outcomes. I have held management accountable for their actions. As an example, in order to have my support for the recently passed bond, several changes were made in the plan that benefits Ohlone. I asked that a better location for the new Newark center be found than was originally proposed and now Ohlone has a site that is better suited for a college. I insisted that improvements be made right away to the Fremont Campus. Today the college has better parking for convenience, better lighting for safety, better athletic facilities and new science labs for improved learning. Ohlone has added new programs in Physical Therapy, Nanotechnology and Performing Arts that are training students for jobs.

The educational needs of community are seemingly limitless yet our resources are very limited. It is imperative that Ohlone College is able to meet as many of the educational needs as possible. The job is complex and the district and I have invested time and money in understanding the complexities of the education system of California. I love the job and will do my best to ensure that Ohlone College is your College of the Community and that you will be proud of it.
