Rotarians Complete Courtyard Facelift at Leitch

Lunchtime at James Leitch School in the Warm Springs District of Fremont is now filled with the chatter of students and teachers in a pleasant patio setting of tables and benches set on cement pads separated by walks lined with flowers and greenery. This is a big change from the layers of woodchips that recently covered the grounds and were not only unsightly, but a water hazard in rainy winter months.

The difference is due to the efforts of the Rotary Club of Warm Springs that volunteered time, money and enthusiasm to complete the transformation. Led by Luis Lira, the club's Community Service Director, whose daughter, Alexis, attends the school, 15,000 square feet of courtyard is now beautifully landscaped and designed to accommodate school residents and visitors.

Luis says, "By spotlighting the needs that exist within our own areas, it makes others aware of how they can help make a change. This project is designed to require ongoing attention through the years and many volunteer projects will arise as a result. Children will see that by giving time and working with others, good things can happen. Parents will be able to participate in gardening projects as their child's class 'adopts' garden areas. Teachers will know that the community supports their efforts to educate their children in a friendly and co-operative atmosphere. Businesses will be able to see how their support makes change possible."

To commemorate the completion of the project, Luis, his wife Teri and Alexis left a lasting impression on in a final portion of the cement patio poured on Saturday, October 2, 2004. Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Warm Springs!
