Workshops to Help Parents of Teens Manage Mood Swings
by Gary Leatherman
Parents of Fremont teens are invited to two free evening workshops to help families manage the normal ups and downs of teen life and to recognize more serious emotional problems. The first workshop is set for Oct. 6 at American High School. The second is scheduled for Nov. 17 at Irvington High School.
The Fremont Chamber of Commerce, the Fremont Unified School District and the City of Fremont are collaborating to present the workshops through a grant the Chamber secured from the Iris Alliance Fund, a national mental health foundation devoted to youth suicide prevention.
The October workshop is scheduled in the AHS library, 36300 Fremont Boulevard, from 7-9 p.m. That workshop will focus on improving communications between parents and teens, recognizing the signs and symptoms of depression and finding help when problems are identified.
The Nov. 17 workshop is scheduled in the IHS library, 41800 Blacow Road, from 7-9 p.m. That program will examine how parents can help teens develop the emotional resilience they need to respond appropriately to challenges and disappointments.
Counselors Sharada Bise and Marvin Bowerman from the Fremont Youth and Family Services Division are scheduled to conduct both workshops. Further information is available at (510) 574-2100.
