Fremont Celebrates Unity in Diversity through Community Service
by Seema Barman
Plans are underway for the City of Fremont's participation in Make a Difference Day 2004. The 14th annual national day of volunteering will be on Saturday, October 23rd, 2004. Once again, the Human Relations Commission is encouraging our diverse population to come together in volunteer service on Make a Difference Day and strive to make our community an even better place to live and work.
Last year, we had a record number of over 26 volunteer projects in Fremont on Make a Difference Day, with more than 600 individuals helping their community! Last year's success came from residents working together in activities like successful food drives, blood drives, school beautification projects, collecting cards for seniors, as well as collecting toiletries, diapers, toys, and Halloween costumes for the needy.
On October 23rd we will see more good work being done in Fremont! Fremont residents of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to participate in Make a Difference Day. Volunteer Projects will be throughout Fremont (Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Niles, and Warm Springs), so you should be able to volunteer close to your home.
Here's how you can GET INVOLVED and help make this event a big success -
* Look around your neighborhood and community. Are people hungry, homeless or ill? Are parks or schools dirty or neglected? Identify a project you would like to work on. Post your project online.
* Gather your family, friends, or neighbors in doing something good.
* Volunteer to help others or spend some time helping to improve your neighborhood school or local community.
* Visit web site www.makeadifferenceday.com for more volunteer project ideas or to find an existing project in Fremont that needs volunteers.
Remember - you can join an existing project, or start one on your own. The national Make a Difference Day website, www.makeadifferenceday.com, has project ideas and a DAYtaBANK of planned projects for 2004.
