Local Team Captures Second Place at State Tournament

Fremont Cal-Ripken (district 5) U-11 All Stars took second place in the Cal-Ripken State Tournament that hosted fourteen teams. Fremont put together a string of six straight wins after an opening loss to earn a berth in the championship game. The championship was hard fought, but the All Stars came up on the short end to Oakland American 10 to 4. Fremont opened the championship game by scoring 3 runs in the first inning. Then Oakland came back with 5 in the bottom half. Fremont got one more run in the second inning but Oakland put 5 more runs on the board in the 3rd. Chris Flexen had a double and 2 RBI's. David Morgan, Rudy Artero, DJ Rutherford each had a single and Jarrett Costa had two singles.
In their first game, the local team lost to the Woodland Regional team 11 to 0. Despite the loss, David Morgan was announced as the Defense Player of the game. In order to reach the championship game, Fremont was forced to win all the rest of their games. They were up to the task as a match with Concord resulted in a 10 - 1 win. Andre Davis was credited with the win and had two doubles and two singles. Costa, Rutherford, Flexen and Morgan each hit a single and Nathan Little and Artero each hit two singles
Monday's contest was against beat Galt and an 8 - 4 win. Artero collected the win in this game and Flexen was credited with the save.
On Tuesday, the All Stars beat Rohnert Park Host 7 to 4. Flexen pitched 5 innings and got the win; Little got the save.
Wednesday morning, Fremont faced Woodland Regional again. This time Fremont beat Woodland 18 to 6. Davis got his second win of the tournament. Artero went 3 for 3, scoring four times. Rutherford went 2 for 4. Flexen had three doubles and Gabe Cordova had two singles.
Wednesday night, the All Stars beat Oakland National team 8 to 7. Little collected the win as Flexen got the save. Elijah Hunt had two singles and scored twice. Oakland scored first 1 in the 1st inning and three in the second. Fremont scored 6 in the top on the 3rd and Oakland tied it in the bottom half. Fremont got two more runs in the top of the forth with Hunt's single and Artero's double, that put two runners on for Fremont. Morgan hit a single and scored both runners. Oakland got a run in the bottom of the 6th.
Thursday, Fremont beat Rohnert Park State team 7 to 6. This outcome came down to the very end of the game. Fremont scored first in the 1st inning. Artero singled and reached second on a pass ball. Morgan doubled & scored Artero. In the third inning Fremont scored three more times. Artero lead off with a single, Davis had singled sent Artero to second. Morgan once again singled and scoring was Artero and Davis. Costa hit a double scoring Morgan. But, Rohnert Park State wasn't going down that easy. Rohnert Park State scored one in the top of the forth inning and then in the fifth, scoring 2 more and in the six they took the lead with three more runs. Going into the bottom of the sixth, Fremont was down by two runs. Hunt popped out to third base for the first out. Then Cordova was walked on four straight pitches. Cordova reached second on a wild pitch and then moved to third on a pass ball. Artero doubled and Cordova scored. Davis lined out to the pitcher for the second out. Morgan reached first base on the right fielder's catching error, scoring the tying run from second was Artero. Morgan reached second on a pass ball. Costa was hit by a pitch. With the winning run on second and two outs, Flexen hit a short fly to third and Morgan never broke stride from second, scoring the winning run. Maurice Miranda and Carmeron Morgan were some outstanding on defense.
David Morgan was honored with The Sportsmanship Code of Babe Ruth Award.
