Last year one of our third grade students, Agustin Maldonado, became
seriously ill with kidney cancer during Thanksgiving break. He passed
away on May 23, 2003. As far as anyone recalls, he was the only Mission
Valley student to pass away while attending our school.

We all wanted to do something special to help us remember Agustin and
his time at Mission Valley, so we established a memorial fund. The
purpose of the fund was to plant a mulberry tree and place a plaque in
Agustin's memory on the playground. We received so many donations that
we were able to also purchase two benches to place by the tree.

Note: A dedication of the tree, benches, and plaque was held on Monday, May 24th.
