Niles Art Walk - A Unique Experience.
by Arathi Satish
Among many fascinating local happenings, the Art Walk stands out. The walk takes place on the first Friday of every month in Fremont's Historic Niles District. During the "First Friday Art Walks," local artists demonstrate their skills and discuss their craft.
The Art Walk started last July. Donna Sanson, one of the featured artists, recalls, "Judy Corrie approached me one day last summer and asked what I thought about starting an event in Niles to promote local artists. We both agreed that there were some very talented people in the area and Niles had the right atmosphere to foster art. We decided on a monthly art walk event, and after several months of testing different nights, settled on "First Friday" Art Walks."
The core art group consists of Rosie Long of Kiowa Rose Jewelry, Ed Frakes of Ed of Niles Artworks, Wayne Corrie of Corrie Glass, Donna Sanson of Donna Sanson Artworks at the Empty Nest and member artists of the Fremont Art Association. Han Trinh at the Nile Cafˇ remains open to provide a place for visitors to enjoy a cup of coffee and a sandwich.
These informal "Art Walk" evenings often include music, guest artists, and even hands-on art activities for visitors. All participating locations are open from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of each month and share their talents through demonstrations, displays, and discussions. The atmosphere is always warm and friendly and the price is right - free!
During the month of May, Donna Sanson hosted a special exhibit entitled, "Legs and More" or "Toe to Toe". All of the student artists used the same photograph as a reference, yet each painting was unique. Donna said, "My instructions were to study the change in value within the photograph - it's this value change that gives the legs and feet form and confirms placement of each leg within the space. I also asked them to pay close attention to the negative space between each limb. And finally, I strongly suggested they avoid flesh tones and have some fun with non-local color."
Interesting themes are scheduled on each of the walk nights and visitors of all ages are sure to find something to fascinate and inspire their own artistic talents. A warm summer evening is the perfect time to stroll along the streets of Niles and experience the talents of the Art Walk artists.
