....Gala Update: "Grant Night" FEF's successful Excellence in Education Gala was held on February 20th 2004. More than 300 attended the gala where Morris Hyman and Fremont Bank were honored for their dedication to the Fremont community and their on-going support of the Fremont Education Foundation since its inception. Funds were also raised by a silent auction and door prizes were awarded. Attendees were also entertained by the Thor Throats from Irvington and Mission San Jose High Schools, Sax Appeal, Pianist Susanne Schwarz and Mission San Jose High School's Jazz Band.
More than $21,000 were earned that night for the Innovative in Excellence Grant program administered by Fremont Education Foundation. These grants fund innovative, quality classroom programs in grades K-12 and are aimed at increasing student achievement in academics, creativity, leadership, critical thinking, and visual and performing arts.
The goal of the grant program is to encourage new approaches to teaching that may subsequently be implemented elsewhere in the district. Grants often fund the acquisition of materials and equipment that provide years of continuing benefit to the classrooms receiving the awards.
All Fremont Unified School District teachers are encouraged to apply for this grant. Applications, for the 2004/2005 school year, are being accepted through April 23rd. Applications are available through the FEF website at www.fremont-education.org or by contacting FEF at (510) 659-2561 or (510) 713-9940.
Mark you calendars for next year's Gala which will be held on Friday, February 25th, 2005. See you There!
...Music 2004 Telethon: Fremont Education Foundation will be having its annual Music 2004 Telethon on Tuesday April 20th, Wednesday April 21st and Thursday April 22nd from 7:00 to 9::00 p.m. The Telethon on Tuesday and Thursday will be televised live on cable channel 26.
Funds from the telethon directly fund the After-School band program that is available to all 4th through 6th graders in all the elementary schools in the Fremont Unified School District. The students and parents do not have to pay any fees to participate in the band, thus enabling any interested child to join the band so that "No Child is Left Behind". After-School Band students have participated in many community events in 2003 including the July 4th parade, Festival of India parade and the Tree Lighting Parade in Niles. Band students will also be having spring concerts in the month of May in different areas of Fremont. Information about the dates, times and locations of the concerts is available on the FEF website, www.fremont-education.org.
The goal in 2003 was to raise $78,000 so that more band classes could be funded. However only $65,000 was raised falling short of the goal by $13,000. This resulted in cutting one week of band instruction from band classes in the current year. FEF also was unable to fund three additional classes in schools where there were interested students.
Currently it costs FEF $83,000 to run the After-School Band program. FEF's goal for 2004 is not to only cover current costs but also add additional courses as demand increases, offer more weeks of instruction and offer additional separate beginning and intermediate classes at different school sites.
To reach these goals and serve all students in Fremont, the Foundation needs the help of all community members during the telethon. Volunteers are needed to operate the phone banks. Donations from individual community members, businesses and corporations are needed to raise more than $83,000.
To volunteer or donate to the program please contact Fremont Education Foundation at (510) 659-2561 or (510) 713-9940. Information can also be found on the FEF website at www.fremont-education.org. Donations can also be mailed to Attn: After-School Band Program, Fremont Education Foundation, P.O. Box 14415, Fremont, CA- 14539.
