Mission San Jose High School Jazz Band present - Somewhere Beyond the Sea
by Praveena Raman
Mission San Jose High School's Jazz Band and the Performing Arts Department invite the community for their 9th annual jazz dinner dance fundraiser on Friday, January 30th 2004 at the Marriott Hotel in Fremont.
For the past 10 years the Performing Arts Department has been organizing this fundraiser with a variety of themes - "April in Paris", 'Baby Its Cold Outside", "Aloha Jazz", "All That Jazz" and "Big Apple" to name a few. The funds raised through this event support programs in the Performing Arts Department. Anne Riley, Performing Arts Department Chair, runs a high quality program together with her colleagues Monica Kraft, Director of Instrumental Music and Lee Glover, Director of Vocal Music. Anne says, "We need these funds to help us keep the department working at a high level and produce very high quality performances. The funds help to defray costs for band, vocal and theatre equipment, scholarships, costumes and production costs of musicals."
Anne Riley and Monica Kraft proudly mention that the band and orchestra have been invited to play and participate in different international festivals. The band, together with the orchestra, has played in Paris and in the London New Year's parade. Last year the Lord Provost of Edinburgh had invited the Jazz band, Marching band and the Orchestra to play at the Edinburgh Easter Festival.
At the upcoming event, Somewhere Beyond the Sea, the Jazz Band will be playing all night with guest vocalists invited to sing with the band. This year's guest vocalists include - Jeff Oliveira, Andrew Sa, Courtney Stokes, Shaiya Rahman, Joshua Guterman, Susie Kang and James Huang. James Huang will be singing the Theme song of the event, "Somewhere Beyond the Sea". A no-host bar at 7:00 p.m. begins the evening with dinner served at 8:15 p.m. Attendees can participate in a silent auction, raffles for gift baskets and dancing until 11:00 p.m. Tickets for the event are $45 per person and $40 for Universal Performers (only one ticket per member). Rooms are available at the discounted rate of $69. Call the Fremont Marriott for information at 510-413-3700, and state that you are attending the MSJ Jazz Dinner Dance. The attire is Semi-Formal. This Jazz Band event will be taking place at the Grand Ballroom in the Marriott Hotel, 46100 Landing Parkway, Fremont.
Following this Jazz Band event, The Performing Arts Department will also be having a Crab Feed fundraiser on March 6th and the spring musical, Les Miserables, opens in March. Students from other schools in the Fremont Unified School District - Irvington High School, Washington High School, Gomes Elementary School, Mission San Jose Elementary School and Chadbourne Elementary School - have also been cast in the show.
