Barracudas take a bite out of the competitionby Praveena Raman
The East Bay Swim League (EBSL) summer season started with dual meets between the Northern and Southern divisions on Saturday, June 4. Five of the six Southern division teams won their first dual meet with the teams from the North. The sixth meet was very close with the Warm Springs Gators losing by 28 points to the San Leandro Drowning Darryls. Returning champions Mission Valley Barracudas won their first dual meet against the Washington Manor Dolphins by 296 points.
The second round of dual meets on Saturday, June 11 marked the beginning of intra-division meets. EBSL is a summer leisure league where coaches, swimmers and families enjoy the social atmosphere and have fun while racing against each other. Many EBSL teams have silly themed meets and coach and parents relays in keeping with the spirit of a leisure league. The Barracudas who have been league champions for four straight years, decided to start their intra-division meet against the Warm Springs Gators with a 70s theme. Coaches and parents dressed up in 70s costumes and poured into the Warm Springs Cabana Club at 7:00 a.m., chatting with the hosts whom they have been swimming against for over 20 years. The very enjoyable morning ended with the Barracudas winning 583:395.
The following Barracudas placed first in two or more individual events on June 4: swimmers ages 10 and under swim a 25 yard race while swimmers ages 11 and older swim a 50 yard race and a 100 yards Individual Medley (IM). Girls: Juliana McCuaig (8 & under - Free, Back, Fly); Claire McLaggan (9-10 - Free, Back, Breast); Audrey McLaggan (11-12 - Free, IM); Hannah Scobel (13-14 - Free, Fly, IM); Annie Scobel (15-18 - Free, Fly); Joanna Wilk (15-18 - Breast, IM).
